Many people in the baby boom generation have childhood memories of growing up in art Deco homes, with relatively open spaces, curved designs, and steel window frames. The metal window frames grew out of fashion, largely because they weren’t very user friendly. Imagine a normal window, except that every time you opened them, the noise felt like somebody was drilling holes in your ear drums. Recently, along with the rest of art deco design having another go, aluminium window frames have become a more common design feature. They have many benefits over their competitors, being both cheap and easy to assemble, as well as long lasting with little maintenance. Aluminium does corrode to some degree, but unlike the porous rust which develops on iron and steel materials, when aluminium corrodes it forms a hard layer, which actually protects the parts which aren’t exposed from further corrosion. Allowing this process to go about though, will result in the aluminium from losing its lustre, so treating it as soon as you install the window frame will help to extend its youthful appearance.
